To commemorate the 115th anniversary of the birth of Cantonese music master Liu Tianyi, the Macao Chinese Orchestra will present a special concert of Cantonese music titled Harmonious Cantonese. Originally scheduled for 29 November (Saturday) at the Dom Pedro V Theatre, the concert will now take place on 28 November (Friday) at 8:00 p.m. at the Theatre, Level 4, Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre. The concert will be conducted by Hong Kong’s young conductor Kin Szeto, featuring the renowned Hong Kong chamber ensemble Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, with Yu Qiwei, a contemporary Cantonese music master and disciple of Liu Tianyi, serving as Artistic Advisor.
Recognised as one of the great masters of Cantonese music, Liu Tianyi was an exceptional performer of gaohu and guzheng, as well as a prolific composer who left behind numerous timeless classics. Centred on the maestro’s illustrious musical career, the concert will feature several of his representative works, including Firework Show, Cherishing the Memory, and Fish Frolic in the Water in Springr, paying musical tribute to the legacy of his artistry. The programme will also include a selection of other Cantonese music pieces—many being premiered in Macao—such as New Rendition of Early Cantonese Music and Cantonese Medley, showcasing both the rich traditional depth and innovative spirit of the genre.
To complement the performance, two thematic lectures have been arranged. The first, titled Liu Tianyi and His path in Cantonese Music, will be held at 4:00 p.m. on 1 November at the Macao Literature House, delivered by Professor Pak Tak-yun, Head of the Music Department of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The second, Everlasting Cantonese Music, will take place at 4:00 p.m. on 29 November at the Theatre Hall of the Macao Academy for Performing Arts, featuring huqin performer Tung Tsz-ching and the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble.
